Wenger hopeful Elneny will be cleared to play for Arsenal over the weekend

Arsenal has been waiting for Mohamed Elneny to officially join the first team for some time now, and Arsene Wenger is optimistic that the wait is almost over.

Speaking after Arsenal’s 3-3 draw at Liverpool on Wednesday, Wenger said Elneny has been training with the team and they “will see if he can qualify for Sunday,” when the Gunners travel to Stoke City.

The midfielder from Swiss side FC Basel flew to London before the new year and passed his medical, although there has been a hold-up in sealing the “complicated” deal.

The 23-year-old Egyptian international is a strong defensive midfielder, a position in need of reinforcement as Francis Coquelin and Santi Cazorla are both out with injuries.
