DC United has been dealt a blow to their early season hopes, as star goalkeeper Bill Hamid could be out for six months.

The stalwart keeper underwent surgery to repair a torn lateral meniscus, leaving DC with two relatively untested backstops to start the season.

Andrew Dykstra played 15 matches last year — 9 in MLS — and rookie Travis Worra played a total of 32 minutes for DC, spending most of his time with USL side Richmond Kickers.

According to advanced stats site Squawka, Hamid was the second most complete goalkeeper in MLS last season behind Real Salt Lake’s Nick Rimando.

Hamid has two caps for the United States men’s national team.
