Atletico Madrid 0-0 Sevilla
With Barcelona coming up victorious on Saturday, Atletico Madrid needed to win to regain La Liga’s top spot (having played one more game than Barca), but fell well short of the required three points against 10-man Sevilla. Instead, the weekend finishes with the two sides level on points, with Barca 14 ahead in the goal differential column.
Atleti couldn’t turn 70 percent of the game’s possession and 21 shots in total (3 on target) into a goal on Sunday.
Real Betis 1-1 Real Madrid
Also coming up short in a disappointing draw on Sunday: Atleti’s capital city rivals, Real Madrid. Playing without Gareth Bale, Los Blancos fell behind after seven minutes when Alvaro Cejudo unleashed an unstoppable volley from the edge of the penalty area.
It would be another 64 minutes before Real would equalize through Karim Benzema in controversial fashion (below video). There was to be no winner on this day, as Real dropped points for the first time under new manager Zinedine Zidane. They were never going to score five goals in every game of the Zidane era.
