The second-leading scorer from last season’s Sporting KC squad is gone.
27-year-old Hungarian striker Krisztian Nemeth has been sold to Qatari club Al-Gharafa FC, the MLS club released. Sporting KC will receive two-thirds of the transfer fee, which was undisclosed.
Nemeth scored 16 goals last season – including the MLS goal of the year – a massive improvement from his former goal tallies when he played in the Netherlands and Hungary, scoring 18 goals in eight years. According to the Kansas City Star, Nemeth was seeking a bump in pay after making $250,000 last season.
“We wish Krisztian the best of luck and thank him for his valuable contributions to the club,” Sporting KC Manager Peter Vermes said in a release by the club. “He is a talented player who made tremendous strides last year, including helping us win the U.S. Open Cup.”
Nemeth was also a part of Hungary’s Euro qualification tour where he appeared in all seven matches, helping Hungary to third place in Group F and a playoff win over Norway.
