“We may not see another goal of that quality for years and years” — something along those lines is often said by commentators when a truly astounding, unbelievable goal is scored.

When Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Dele Alli scored his magnificent, self-made volley late last month, folks all around the world thought, “Whoa, we might not see a goal that good for quite a while.”

Well, Jamie Vardy must have heard those comments and, much as his career has become about doing the same thing, felt inclined to prove them wrong. Just 10 days later, the Leicester City striker went top corner over the goalkeeper’s head from 20 yards out, on the volley himself.

At the end of the season, we’ll all sit around and debate who scored the Goal of the Year, and it’ll inevitably come down to these two wonder-goals scored just 10 days apart in January and February. (Hint: the correct answer is, and will always be, Alli, for the sheer brilliance of ingenuity, the audacity and the technique required to not only create the chance, from absolutely nothing, for himself, but to finish with such precision and aplomb.)
