Iosif Cholevas caused a roar around the ground when his shot from the left cruised around the outside of the goal, but the Hornets had not broken through with his 52nd minute shot.
Diego Costa was involved in hijinks early, trading yellow cards with Paredes in the first half, but he nearly turned provider to Oscar in the 55th minute only to watch the winger push it wide of the goal.
