The headliner in the Spanish top flight today was the 1-0 Atletico Madrid win at the Bernabeu and subsequent Cristiano Ronaldo comments about his teammates.
In-form Frenchman Antoine Griezmann scored the difference-maker over Real Madrid, sending Atletico four points above their cross-town rivals. Following the match, Cristiano Ronaldo said Real Madrid would be in first place if his teammates were all as good as him, before meekly recanting his comments.
There were a few other scorelines from Spain which also meant plenty to their teams in the relegation battle.
Espanyol put a four-spot on Sporting Gijon on the road at El Molinon, winning 4-2 for their second straight win, pushing them four points above the relegation zone and leaving Sporting still mired in the drop.
Rayo Vallecano grabbed a valuable road point at Real Betis, coming back from a 2-0 halftime deficit with a pair of goals from Angolan striker Manucho, with the brace completed just six minutes after the break. The 32-year-old has really struggled this season, with just one goal in 17 appearances coming into today (mostly off the bench), but coming on at halftime for Miku, he sparked the comeback. The point moves Vallecano two points off the drop, whereas Betis took their point to move level with Espanyol five points above the relegation zone.
Finally, Real Sociedad and Malaga played to a 1-1 draw. Malaga will be disappointed here, as they held the lead until the 81st minute when Imamnol Agirretxe scored 9 minutes after coming off the bench.
