That means Saturday’s match at the Westfalenstadion could see Borussia Dortmund pull to within two points of Bayern for the top spot in Germany… or Bayern restore an almost impossible to overcome 8-point advantage atop the table.
First things first, how did we get here?
Bayern Munich 1-2 Mainz
When Arjen Robben canceled Mainz’s lead with a 64th minute goal, it seemed a bit of same-old, same-old on the horizon for Bayern Munich at the Allianz Arena, but Jhon Cordoba struck in the 86th minute to give the visitors a big three points in the race for European places.
It was the first loss for Pep Guardiola’s bunch since a Dec. 5 defeat at Borussia Monchengladbach, but the second-place team stayed hot, and are now hot on their heels.
Darmstadt 0-2 Borussia Dortmund
The visitors now haven’t lost in seven matches across Europe, as no one’s been able to find a point against BVB. Adrian Ramos scored late in the first half and Erik Durm early in the second to set up Saturday’s duel at Dortmund.
