Newcastle United’s season is on the brink, and only their manager’s job status may be more dire.

Joshua King scored and forced a Steven Taylor own goal as Bournemouth battered a mostly listless Newcastle side 3-1 at St. James Park on Saturday.

Charlie Daniels also scored for the Cherries, while Ayoze Perez scored Newcastle’s only goal.

The win boosts Bournemouth to 11 points clear of the drop, while Newcastle is 19th. The Magpies are a point back of 17th place Sunderland, their opponent in two weeks.

The desperate Magpies started lively, and Jonjo Shelvey ripped an early shot wide of the goal. Not too long after, Ayoze Perez side-footed a 19-yard shot over the bar.

But it was Bournemouth who took the lead through an own goal by Steven Taylor, who turned Joshua King’s cross past Rob Elliot to make it 1-0 in the 28th minute.

Taylor missed a chance to redeem himself in the 45th minute, as his shot deflected out for a corner.
