In the first-ever Champions League knockout tie to end 0-0 after two legs, Atletico Madrid outlasted PSV Eindhoven 8-7 in penalty kicks to advance to the Champions League quarterfinals.

PSV Eindhoven’s Luciano Narsingh was the only player to miss a penalty kick, as Juanfran smashed home the winner for Atleti.

After a subdued first leg that finished a goalless draw, there was a great pace to the opening 45 minutes of the second leg with both teams looking for that all-important goal.

Atletico’s leading scorer Antoine Griezmann had the best chance of the first half, but his header from close-range was cleared off the line by PSV goalkeeper Jeroen Zoet.

The second half was more of the same, with both sides pushing but neither able to find the back of the net. PSV couldn’t capitalize when Jurgen Locadia’s shot bounced past Jan Oblak and ricocheted off the post, which led to a scramble in the box that was eventually cleared by Atletico.

Fernando Torres came off the bench for Atleti and looked a constant threat on the attack, but after 180 minutes of scoreless football between the sides, extra-time was in store.

Even with an extra 30 minutes neither side could break the deadlock, leaving penalty kicks to decide a winner.

Each side buried their first seven penalty kicks, leaving Luciano Narsingh to shoot for PSV. Narsingh only entered the match in the 118th minute and smashed his shot off the crossbar, with Juanfran stepping up for Atleti to score the game-winner.
