Southampton 3-2 Liverpool: Mane goes from goat to hero in comeback

  • Sadio Mane made up for a missed penalty by scoring a pair of goals as Southampton came from 2-0 down to beat Liverpool 3-0 at St. Mary’s on Sunday.

    Graziano Pelle also scored for Saints, who move 7th with 47 points.

    Philippe Coutinho and Daniel Sturridge scored for Liverpool, who stay ninth with 44 points.

    Liverpool won an early corner that didn’t come to much, while Saints had a spell in attack that had the same fate.

    Shane Long hit the deck inside the Liverpool box after contact from Dejan Lovren, but Roger East did not consider the 10th minute incident penalty-worthy.

    The Reds took the lead through Coutinho, who sent a long-distance pearl bounding past Forster. Four minutes later, it was 2-0 when Sturridge added his goal on a 2v2 break.

    Allen appeared to have heaped misery on Saints with a goal just after the half-hour, but Mamadou Sakho was called for interference and it remained 2-0.

    Martin Skrtel took down Pelle in the box early in the second half, and Roger East gave Southampton an attempt from the spot. Sadio Mane was saved by Simon Mignolet.

    It looked like it wasn’t Saints day, but Mane did pull one back in the 64th minute. He collected a pass from Pelle and beat Mignolet.

    Pelle leveled things up in the 83rd minute, blasting a left-footed shot past Mignolet.
