Stoke City and England goalkeeper Jack Butland has been ruled out through the summer after the 23-year-old suffered a broken ankle in Saturday’s 3-2 victory over Germany, his club side announced on Sunday.

Consequently, Butland will miss the remainder of the Premier League season and this summer’s European Championship, which kicks off June 10 in France.

With Joe Hart currently out for an unknown period of time, Butland had been named England’s no. 1 heading into the current round of international friendlies and seemed destined to deputize Hart at Euro 2016 and push him for the starting job in the future, if not start in his place this summer.

With Hart and Butland both out injured, Southampton’s Fraser Forster and Burnley’s Tom Heaton are the next-in-line ‘keepers on the roster ahead of Tuesday’s friendly against the Netherlands.
