Following Jack Butland‘s devastating injury with England last week, another high-profile Premier League goalkeeper suffered a crucial blow on Tuesday.
Republic of Ireland and Newcastle keeper Rob Elliot will reportedly miss at least six months after sustaining a significant crucial ligament injury while on international duty.
While attempting to save Slovakia’s opening goal, the 29-year old Elliot went down in agonizing pain and immediately grasped at his knee.
The injury is not only a massive loss for Ireland, who has the 2016 European Championship to worry about this summer, but Newcastle’s hopes of remaining in the Premier League are hanging in the balance.
The Magpies currently have eight matches left to climb out of the PL relegation zone. Newcastle sits 19th on the table, three points behind Norwich City, who is just above the drop zone. The two sides are set to meet over the weekend, which could decide which team stays up next season.
