Arsenal 4-0 Watford: Gunners cruise, keep title hopes alive

  • Arsenal beat Watford 4-0 at the Emirates Stadium on Saturday as Arsene Wenger‘s side momentarily went three points behind Tottenham.

    Alexis Sanchez and Alex Iwobi both scored in the first half, while Hector Bellerin and Theo Walcott added insurance goals against a ragged Watford outfit.

    With the win Arsenal remain in third and now have 58 points but have a game in hand of Spurs and Leicester, while Watford stay on 37 points.

    The Gunners started brightly and took the lead in the fourth minute.

    Alex Iwobi crossed for Sanchez and his initial header was saved by Heurelho Gomes but the ball bounced back to Sanchez who slotted home. 1-0.

    Watford grew into the game and Odion Ighalo almost wriggled free, plus Troy Deeney had a header easily saved by David Ospina.

    Before half time Arsenal doubled their lead as Francis Coquelin played in Sanchez who set up Iwobi to slot home his second Premier League goal. 2-0.

    Minutes into the second half it was 3-0 to Arsenal as Bellerin’s left-footed volley was deflected past Gomes and in. Moments later it should have been 4-0 but Iwobi struck the crossbar and then Mesut Ozil skewed the follow up over.

    Deeney forced Ospina into a good save as Watford looked to grab a consolation but Arsenal’s substitutes combined in stoppage time with Joel Campbell teeing up Walcott to slot home the fourth goal.

    The Gunners eased to victory and put some pressure on Tottenham and Leicester City who play later in Week 32.
