While the United skipper is not fit to face Tottenham in the Premier League on Sunday (Watch live, 11 a.m. ET on NBCSN and online via Live Extra), he will be on the pitch when the U21’s play Middlesbrough on Monday.
Rooney’s last action came on February 13, missing nearly two months of play with ligament damage in his knee. Manager Louis Van Gaal said his captain has been training with the first team but will start off with a rehab assignment with the reserves.
United have won four of their five league matches without Rooney, and are hopeful he will be back for their midweek FA Cup replay against West Ham.
Without Rooney, Van Gaal’s side faces a very tough trip to White Hart Lane to play a Tottenham team in the thick of the title race. Spurs lost their first match of the season to United and will be keen to avenge that early slip-up.
For United, a win over Tottenham is vital for their top-four push. Currently just one point behind Man City, United must continue to find results in an effort to secure a spot in the Champions League next season.
