We understand Joleon Lescott‘s sentiments, but maybe now isn’t the right time to be expressing them.
Aston Villa has been relegated from the Premier League for the first time in its history, and the defender says that could help ease the burden on the team the final weeks of the season.
Say what now?
Of course, Villa has been destined for the drop for weeks and just playing with mathematical inevitability, but take a gander at these words from the defender, from the BBC:
“It’s about results so regardless of how we played in patches today we are relegated. We need to find a way to get out of this run of defeats. Now it’s confirmed maybe it’s a weight off the shoulders and we can give these fans what they deserve, some performances.
“Throughout the season we have given reasons for people to jump on us. It’s part of football, we have to take that on the chin. It’s a tough time at the minute. At the back of our minds is next season to get promoted. I’m here for as long as Aston Villa want me.”
A weight off the shoulders? That’s not exactly “fighting til the end talk” from a player who should be one of the veteran leaders at Villa Park.
Wow. What was that team room like this year?!?
