Funes Mori, 25, stamped down on Origi’s ankle right where the foot meets the leg, sending the Liverpool striker out of the match on a stretcher and the Everton defender to the locker room with a red card.
The defender walked off the pitch clutching the Everton crest on his shirt and waving toward supporters, but a day’s clarity has him feeling shame.
“I very much regret what happened yesterday. It was never my intention to harm a rival nor my colleagues [by] leaving the field. And regarding Divock Origi, I fervently hope it’s nothing serious and know that was never my intention to hurt [him]. I ask my apologies [sic] for what happened.”
That’s fine to say — and it’s certainly good to apologize — but if Funes Mori wasn’t attempting to hurt him I’m not sure what “attempting to hurt” means anymore.
