Rafa Benitez has had some memorable Premier League comebacks at Anfield, but this is the first as a visitor.

Adam Lallana and Daniel Sturridge lifted Liverpool to a 2-0 lead that would not hold up as desperate Newcastle picked up a point at Anfield on Saturday.

Papiss Cisse and Jack Colback scored as Newcastle came back to tie the match thanks to great work from Andros Townsend.

The Magpies remain in 19th, and are level in points with Sunderland and one behind Norwich. The Black Cats have two games-in-hand on Newcastle, while Norwich has one.

Liverpool finishes the day in 7th place.

Newcastle was quickly on the wrong foot, as Sturridge worked around two NUFC backs to belt a shot across Karl Darlow in the 2nd minute. Bad news, Magpies.

Lallana then found himself atop the 18 with plenty of room, curling a gorgeous shot into the upper 90 past a flying and helpless Darlow.

Papiss Cisse came close to pulling a goal back for the Magpies, but his header went wide and Newcastle had it “all to do” in the second half.

The Magpies closed the gap to 2-1 on a pretty big mistake from Simon Mignolet. Andros Townsend held up play well before Vurnon Anita crossed a looping ball that Mignolet misjudged and Cisse headed home.

And Cisse should’ve made it 2-2 when Georginio Wijnaldum slid a gorgeous counter attack pass to the striker, but the Senegalese veteran took three too many touches before Townsend hit the ball over the frame.

Roberto Firmino looked to have restored Liverpool’s cushion, but his tap-in goal just before the hour mark was offside.

Soon after, Newcastle knotted the match at 2 when Colback’s had his hard shot deflect past Mignolet. The play again started with Townsend, who is shining for Newcastle.
