Seydou Doumbia was brought to Newcastle in January to help the team stave off Premier League relegation.

So why was the striker in Russia when the Magpies fought back from two goals down to draw 2-2 at Liverpool on Sunday?

No one is quite sure, but the 28-year-old striker was spotted watching his old club CSKA Moscow over the weekend after failing to be included in Rafa Benitez‘s squad for the match at Anfield.

Newcastle signed Doumbia on loan from Roma in the winter with the hopes that the Ivorian’s goals would turn things around at St. James’ Park. However, things have not gone as planned.

Doumbia has managed less than 30 minutes of game-time in three substitute appearances for the Magpies. He has registered just one shot in the Premier League, and his lack of minutes and recent absence from the squad have yet to be explained.

The Magpies currently sit 19th on the table, one point below safety.
