  • Magpies nearly doomed to drop
  • Villa already relegated
  • Villa, NUFC draw twice

Newcastle United’s move out of the drop zone lasted all of one week, as the Magpies couldn’t find a way past the porous defense of Aston Villa in a 0-0 draw at Villa Park on Saturday.

Aston Villa entered the game having conceded an almost absurd 72 goals, and Newcastle couldn’t make it 73 in falling to 17th place with one match to play.

The Magpies have Spurs left, while Sunderland has a big advantage in goal differential and two matches (home to Everton, away to Watford).

Aston Villa, of course, has already been relegated.

The possession was mostly Newcastle’s early, but the Magpies failed to threaten goal.

That could’ve changed in the 25th minute, as Georginio Wijnaldum tried to score off a free kick just inside the corner flag. He floated it high and wide.

The chances refused to come, with Papiss Cisse lashing a bouncing volley into the keeper’s hands in the 37th.

Colback skied a chance over the bar just a minute into the second half, as Newcastle was clearly aware that Sunderland was losing at home to Chelsea.

Villa stayed tight in its box during a series of Newcastle corners and crosses, and the match his the hour mark with the Magpies still on track for just a point.

Substitute Aleksandar Mitrovic raced onto a second ball and flicked it over Mark Bunn… but also over the crossbar. Still 0-0.

Balloons littered the pitch, and Villa seemed to have a great scoring chance saved by Karl Darlow. The flag was up for offside.

Bunn made a terrific save on Moussa Sissoko as Newcastle began the final 20 minutes with plenty of threat. Mitrovic then again just missed on a header in the 74th, and now Sunderland was leading Chelsea!
