Newcastle United 5-1 Tottenham Hotspur: Wijnaldum, relegated Magpies drop Spurs third

Georginio Wijnaldum scored a brace and Moussa Sissoko ran rampant as Newcastle United battered Spurs 4-1 at St. James Park on Sunday.

Rolando Aarons. Daryl Janmaat and Aleksandar Mitrovic also scored for the Magpies, with Mitrovic seeing red in the win. Newcastle finishes in 18th.

Spurs finish third, with Erik Lamela scoring their only goal in a miserable performance.

Newcastle struck first through, with Daryl Janmaat sweeping a cross into the box. Moussa Sissoko, Aleksandar Mitrovic had a three-touch tic-tac-toe that ended with Georginio Wijnaldum lacing it inside the far post. 1-0.

The Magpies doubled their advantage through Mitrovic, with Sissoko swirling a cross toward the spot and the big 21-year-old Serb barreled into his headed goal. 2-0, 40′.

Spurs pulled a goal back, breaking up the field after a Cheick Tiote giveaway and moving the ball fluidly before Lamela belted a shot that Karl Darlow pushed under his own bar in the 60th minute.

Darlow made a stop on Onomah in the 65th minute on a similar chance from the other side of the 18.

Mitrovic did not help Newcastle’s cause with an absurdly dangerous tackle on Kyle Walker, stamping down hard on the defender’s ankle before being sent off.

But a Magpies counter undid Spurs’ man advantage, as Sissoko took a spill in the Tottenham box to win a penalty kick that Wijnaldum coolly converted to make it 3-1. Aarons and Janmaat added their goals as Newcastle struck thrice while down to 10 men.
