He’s healthy, wanted, and in-form, but El Tri won’t have Giovani dos Santos for the Copa America Centenario.
That’s because the L.A. Galaxy striker has declined the chance to represent Mexico in this summer’s tournament.
The 27-year-old has 17 goals in 90 caps for Mexico. Here’s El Tri manager Juan Carlos Osorio, from MLSSoccer.com:
“Effectively, based on this great moment [in MLS] and the goals that he’s been scoring for his club [LA Galaxy], Giovani was invited to this call-up,” said Mexican national team head coach Juan Carlos Osorio, who is a former MLS coach. “But Giovani himself declined the invitation.”
This is a major surprise, and a boon for the Galaxy given they’re going to be missing Robbie Keane (Euro 2016) and Gyasi Zardes (Copa America) for a good portion of the summer.
As for El Tri, their strike corps is plentiful with Javier “Chicharito” Hernandez, Carlos Vela and Oribe Peralta in the mix, not to mention Portuguese Primera Liga duo Raul Jimenez and Jesus Manuel Corona.
