Manchester United brought in various high-profile talents last summer, including Memphis Depay, Bastian Schweinsteiger and Anthony Martial, but the Red Devils also were prepared to break the bank for a Bayern Munich star.

Bayern CEO Karl-Heinz Rummenigge has come out and said that United made the Bundesliga champions a “mad offer” for Thomas Muller in 2015.

Rummenigge told Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung:

“Thomas Muller came out of it [the youth academy]. [He is] born near Munich, formed here, the hero of the fans,” the Bayern chief said. “We had a mad offer from Manchester United last year, which was not a topic for one second.

“We could have secured a world-record transfer fee.”

Despite finishing in fifth in the Premier League, United could have surely used some of Muller’s 32 goals across all competitions.

Unfortunately for the Red Devils, the German international and his club seem quite intent on him staying at Bayern for the foreseeable future.
