EURO 2016: Setting the stage for final round of group games

With 24 games already played (it’s hard to believe, I know!) at EURO 2016, one final round of group games remains before moving on to the knockout portion of the tournament.

Only three places in the round of 16 have been officially clinched, while only one side has been officially eliminated from the knockout stage of the tournament. The following permutations should serve only as a guide when the final round of group games kick off on Sunday…

Group A

France (6 points): Already advanced to round of 16; will win Group A with win or draw vs. Switzerland (Sunday, 3 p.m. ET)

Switzerland (4 points): Assured of top-three finish; will win Group A with win over France

Romania (1 point): Currently the fifth-ranked third-place team (top four advance); will likely finish as one of four best third-place teams with victory over Albania

Albania (0 points): Can still advance as one of four best third-place teams with victory over Romania

Group B

England (4 points): Assured of top-three finish; will win Group B with victory over Slovakia (Monday, 3 p.m. ET), or draw vs. Slovakia and Wales draw or loss vs. Russia

Wales (3 points): Can finish first, second, third or fourth; will win Group B with victory over Russia and England loss to Slovakia

Slovakia (3 points): Currently the second-ranked third-place team; can finish first, second, third or fourth; will win Group B with victory over England and Wales draw or loss vs. Russia

Russia (1 point): Can still advance as second- or third-place team with victory over Wales

Group C

Germany (4 points): Assured of top-three finish; will win Group C with victory over Northern Ireland (Tuesday, 12 p.m. ET) and Poland loss or draw vs. Ukraine

Poland (4 points): Assured of top-three finish; will win Group C with victory over Ukraine and Germany loss or draw vs. Northern Ireland

Northern Ireland (3 points): Currently the first-ranked third-place team; assured of top-three finish; will win Group C with victory over Germany and Poland loss or draw vs. Ukraine

Ukraine (0 points): Already eliminated from knockout stage

Group D

Spain (6 points): Already advanced to round of 16; will win Group D with victory or draw vs. Croatia (Tuesday (3 p.m. ET)

Croatia (4 points): Assured of top-three finish; will win Group D with victory over Spain

Czech Republic (1 point): Currently the fourth-ranked third-place team; will finish top-three with victory over Turkey; unlikely to finish as one of four best third-place teams with draw vs. Turkey

Turkey (0 points): Can only advance as one of four best third-place teams; can advance as one of four best third-place teams with victory over Czech Republic

Group E

Italy (6 points): Already advance to round of 16; will win Group E with win or draw vs. Ireland (Wednesday, 9 p.m. ET)

Belgium (3 points): Can finish first, second, third or fourth; will advance to round of 16 with victory or draw vs. Sweden

Sweden (1 point): Currently the sixth-ranked third-place team; finish second with victory over Belgium; unlikely to finish as one of four best third-place teams with draw vs. Belgium

Ireland (1 point): Can finish second, third or fourth; will finish second with victory over Ireland and Belgium loss to Sweden; likely to advance as one of four best third-place teams with victory over Italy and Belgium win or draw vs. Sweden

Group F

Hungary (4 points): Assured of top-three finish; will win Group F with victory over Portugal (Wednesday, 12 p.m. ET); likely to advance as one of four best top-three teams with loss to Portugal and Iceland victory over Austria

Iceland (2 points): Can finish first, second, third or fourth; will win Group F with victory over Austria and Portugal victory or draw vs. Hungary; likely to finish as one of four best top-three teams with draw vs. Austria and Portugal victory over Hungary

Portugal (2 points): Can finish first, second, third or fourth; will win Group F with victory over Hungary and Iceland loss or draw vs. Austria; likely to finish as one of four best top-three teams with draw vs. Hungary and Iceland victory over Austria

Austria (1 point): Can finish second, third or fourth; will finish second or third with victory over Iceland and Portugal loss or draw vs. Hungary; unlikely to advance as one of four best top-three teams with draw vs. Iceland and Portugal loss to Hungary
