The game in 100 words (or less): Mike Grella’s brace led the New York Red Bulls to a 2-0 win over the Seattle Sounders in Harrison on Sunday. Grella scored a goal on each side of the break as the Long Island native continues to impress for his hometown club. The Red Bulls have won five straight matches in all competitions, now sitting just one point behind the Union for the top spot in the Eastern Conference. For Seattle, the Sounders have lost four of their last five league matches and continue to dwell towards the bottom of the table out West.

Three moments that mattered

18′ — Grella’s fifth of the year puts RBNY ahead — Mike Grella gets credit for the goal, but Sacha Kljestan made it all happen. Kljestan cut past his defender and bent a shot on target, hitting the post and falling right to Grella for an easy tap-in.

33′ — Morris just misses chance to equalize — Jordan Morris nearly found his sixth goal of the season but just missed his chance wide. Andreas Ivanschitz whipped in a cross from the left and Morris had Luis Robles beat with his header, but it sailed just over the bar.

59′ — Grella chips to get his second — Mike Grella took advantage of a poor clearance from Brad Evans to grab his second goal of the game. Evans didn’t get enough on his touch when he slid to break up a through ball, allowing Grella to walk in and hit a clever chip over the keeper to make it 2-0 to New York.
