Pictures (see below) of Manchester United and England defender Chris Smalling on a stretcher and in a neck brace have been circulating around the internet this morning.
Smalling, 26, is currently on vacation in Bali after England’s exit from EURO 2016 at the Round of 16 stage and reports had initially suggested he had been stung in the face by a jellyfish.

There was plenty of concern for the center back but it has now been revealed he was hospitalized after feeling unwell and then falling over and hitting his head.
In a statement on United’s website, the club confirmed Smalling had fallen ill and gave an update on his current condition:
Manchester United can clarify Chris Smalling has had food poisoning during his holiday which resulted in him fainting on Sunday. The 26-year-old defender was taken to the hospital and is now feeling fine.
Smalling is currently on vacation in Bali following his time with England at Euro 2016 before reporting back for pre-season training later this month. Chris would like to thank everyone for their well wishes.
Smalling’s teammates return to preseason training on Monday with Jose Mourinho taking his first sessions as United’s new manager.
United will tour China this summer, playing friendlies against Borussia Dortmund on Jul. 22 and Manchester City on Jul. 25. They then play Galatasaray in Gothenburg on Jul. 30 before squaring off against Everton on Aug. 3 for Wayne Rooney‘s testimonial and then clashing with Leicester City at Wembley Stadium on Aug. 7 for the Community Shield.
Smalling will likely be back fit and ready to go before the first games of preseason begin but getting food poisoning at the start of the only two weeks you will get off all year is rough.
It also sums up Smalling’s summer as he and England are still reeling from that shock EURO 2016 exit to Iceland last week.
