Everton 1-1 Tottenham: Even encounter at Goodison

Everton and Tottenham Hotspur had to settle for a  point each as they drew 1-1 on the opening day of the season.

The Toffees took an early lead as Ross Barkley‘s free kick missed everyone and went in to give Ronald Koeman a dream start on his Everton debut. However, Spurs came surging back in the second half and Erik Lamela headed home to grab a point for Spurs who were denied a winner after Maarten Stekelenburg saved superbly twice.

Everton took the lead early with Barkley whipping in a free kick which missed everyone and went into the far corner. 1-0 to the Toffees.

Phil Jagielka then headed towards goal but Hugo Lloris tipped it over in a bright start for the home side.

Tottenham’s captain and goalkeeper Lloris was forced off and Michel Vorm came on and soon Vorm had a big save to make. Gerard Deulofeu raced clear but Vorm saved well down low as Everton missed a great chance to double their lead.

In the second half Spurs made a change with Vincent Janssen coming on and almost immediately they drew level. Lamela headed the ball home from Kyle Walker‘s right-wing cross. 1-1. Game on.

On his debut Janssen forced a tremendous stop from countryman Stekelenburg to keep the scores level and then the Dutch goalkeeper pushed another effort onto the crossbar as Spurs went after the winner late on but it didn’t arrive.
