Southampton 1-1 Watford: Saints held by 10-man Hornets

Southampton and 10-man Watford drew 1-1 at St Mary’s on Saturday on the opening day of the season.

Watford went ahead through Etienne Capoue who prodded home but Nathan Redmond volleyed home in the second half to grab a point for Claude Puel on his home debut.

Southampton started brightly enough and almost scored with Maya Yoshida after Heurelho Gomes made a mess of Dusan Tadic‘s free kick.

However, the Hornets dominated after that with Capoue popping up in the right place at the right time to tap home his first goal for the club. 1-0.

Saints just couldn’t get hold of the ball as Watford continued to pour forward and Puel looked concerned on the sidelines.

Dusan Tadic clipped in a ball which Long headed just wide at the far post and Redmond then volleyed just wide.

Saints pushed hard in the second half and grabbed a deserved equalizer before the hour mark as a corner fell to Redmond and he calmly volleyed home through a crowd. 1-1.

Nordin Amrabat whipped in a great ball which both Troy Deeney and Odion Ighalo couldn’t get on the end of and it was an end-to-end encounter to finish the game.

Watson, who only came on as a sub in the second half, was shown a straight red card for hauling down Long as he raced clear and the Hornets played the last 15 minutes with 10-men.

Saints pushed hard for a winner but Long completely missed the ball after Matt Targett‘s pull back and then Redmond was flagged for an offside decision after putting the ball into the net.
