Hope Solo’s comments in which the U.S. women’s national team goalkeeper said her Swedish competitors “played like cowards” were “really disappointing” for her USWNT teammate Megan Rapinoe.

Rapinoe spoke to Mike Tirico during NBC’s coverage of the 2016 Rio Olympics on Thursday, and the conversation was inevitably steered toward Solo’s comments following the USWNT’s elimination from the competition last Friday.

Beyond being “really disappointed,” Rapinoe went on to say, “That’s not our team. That’s not what this team has always been. That’s not what this team will be in the future.” Her full answer can be heard in the video below.

It’s entirely possible to simultaneously disagree with Solo’s comments, and think those comments aren’t necessarily an indictment of her character. Solo is not the first, nor will she be the last, athlete to say something controversial immediately after losing (or winning) a game. She was, and surely still is, disappointed to have not delivered a fourth straight Olympic gold medal.

At the end of the day, the only opinions that matter are those of the women with whom Solo shares a locker room. Once it affects the team, they’re the ones with the power and responsibility to remove her from the team. They will handle the matter internally and police themselves, just as we have allow every other successful sports teams to do.
