Tottenham Hotspur got their first win of the 2016-17 Premier League season on Saturday, topping Crystal Palace 1-0 in a victory that was much more dominant than the narrow scoreline would indicate.
The first half was all Tottenham, but Hennessey’s man-of-the-half performance kept Palace on level terms for more than 80 minutes. The Welsh no. 1 made a trio of fine saves in the opening 45 minutes, denying a Toby Aldeweireld header (12th minute), a Harry Kane strike from well outside the penalty area (27th minute), and Vincent Janssen‘s follow-up of Kane’s effort from point-blank range.

The second half saw more Spurs domination with a handful of Palace half-chances mixed in. Janssen’s 69th-minute miss was the most egregiously wasted opportunity as the Dutchman get in behind and fired his one-on-one effort wide of Hennessey’s left-hand post.
The breakthrough finally came for Spurs in the 83rd minute. Victor Wanyama rose above the crowd to head home Kane’s corner kick to the far post. Hennessey was there and ever so close to making another spectacular save, but the Nigerian got his first goal for Spurs and secured all three points.

The victory puts Mauricio Pochettino‘s side in a strong position — four points from two games — with fixtures against mid-table sides out of the way. Palace, meanwhile, will be searching for their first win of the season next week when they host Bournemouth at Selhurst Park.
