Romelu Lukaku hit a second-half hat trick in 12 minutes to lead Everton past old boss David Moyes and Sunderland on Monday at the Stadium of Light.

Everton moves level with Chelsea for second in the Premier League, with 10 points.

Sunderland is 19th, with a single point.

Defoe was Jermain-on-the-spot when a deflected shot found him on Maarten¬†Stekelenburg’s doorstep, but the English striker belted the ball over the frame from in-tight.

At the other end, Lukaku powered a Yannick Bolasie cross at Pickford, but the Black Cats keeper slapped it just over the bar for a corner.

American midfielder Lynden Gooch came close to curling one home, but Stekelenburg was there to make the save and keep it 0-0 before halftime.

Idrissa Gueye and Yannick Bolasie set Lukaku up for his first two goals, both headers, before Kevin Mirallas sent the third helper to the big Belgian.
