“I love Eric Dier, Eric Dier loves me…”
That chant sung to the tune of ‘Land of Hope and Glory’ has become very popular at White Hart Lane in recent years and it will carry on for a while longer too.
On Tuesday Eric Dier signed a new five-year contract at Tottenham Hotspur as the versatile midfielder will remain at the Lane.

Still just 22 years old, Dier has impressed since arriving from Sporting Lisbon for the 2014-15 season. Dier played in every game of England’s EURO 2016 campaign and after initially being signed as center back who could play right back, he has thirved in a holding midfield role for Mauricio Pochettino‘s team who finished third in the Premier League last season.
Speaking to Spurs’ website, Dier revealed why he decided to remain in north London.
Dier has become indispensable to this Tottenham side, sitting in front of the back four to win the ball and provide a defensive shield which allows the likes of Christian Eriksen, Dele Alli, Harry Kane, Erik Lamela and others to pour forward.
He is a powerful central midfield with an eye for a pass but after coming through as a defender, he keeps both Tottenham and England’s defenses solid as a rock. Dier already has 90 games under his belt for Spurs, scoring six goals over the past three seasons.
With Eriksen signing a new deal last week, Dier is the latest to commit his future to Tottenham as Pochettino’s side prepare for their return to the UEFA Champions League on Wednesday against AS Monaco at Wembley Stadium, plus their new stadium at White Hart Lane will be ready for the start of the 2018-19 season.
Dier, like Spurs, has a bright future.
