Jose Mourinho has dropped his captain and talisman.

Wayne Rooney, 30, was named on the bench for Manchester United’s clash against Leicester City on Saturday (Watch live, 7:30 a.m. ET on NBCSN and online via NBC Sports) at Old Trafford.

Mourinho has come under scrutiny in the past week for the form of Rooney and after scoring just once in his opening eight games of the season, Rooney has paid the price.

During the week Mourinho had slammed the media and “football Einsteins” for criticizing not only his management but his players but it seems like he was listening to plenty of pundits and fans who suggested Rooney should not be starting for the Red Devils after his poor run of form.

Mourinho has instead started Juan Mata in the No. 10 role and has also dropped Marouane Fellaini, bringing in Ander Herrera for the Belgian midfielder.

Let’s see if these changes get the most out of the most expensive player in the world, Paul Pogba, who has so far underwhelmed at Old Trafford.

Dropping Rooney is a very, very big call from Mourinho so early in his time in charge at United.

Let’s see how this works out.
