Sterling, 21, has pulled out of Gareth Southgate‘s first squad as interim manager and the Manchester City winger will not face Malta or Slovenia in England’s upcoming 2018 World Cup qualifiers.

After a stellar start to this season under new manager Pep Guardiola at Man City, big things were expected of Sterling during this international break.

However it was confirmed by the FA that the lightning quick wide-man suffered an injury following City’s 2-0 defeat at Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday and he has been replaced in the squad by Crystal Palace winger Andros Townsend.

No specific details have been given about Sterling’s injury but he was replaced by Leroy Sane in the 87th minute of City’s defeat at White Hart Lane.

Sterling’s stop-start opening season at City during the 2015-16 campaign was due to small injuries and a loss of form but so far this season he’s looked a new player, with plenty of hunger and he’s scored five goals, including three in his last four appearances.

With Adam Lallana also out for England, Southgate will likely have to rely on the likes of Theo Walcott, Michail Antonio and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain in wide areas in the upcoming qualifiers.
