Manchester United’s Memphis torn at dream club: “Feel like a loaded gun”

When Louis Van Gaal landed speedy PSV Eindhoven winger Memphis Depay in 2015, it felt very much like a game-changing addition to the Manchester United attack.

Memphis had just turned 21 at the time and was set to complete a 28-goal season in the Netherlands. He had scored a match-winning goal at the World Cup, playing a significant role as the Dutch finished third. Life was very good.

After an electric start to life at Old Trafford included a two-goal day against Club Brugge in the UEFA Champions League, Memphis struggled to find his footing. The winger scored 7 times in 45 appearances, with just two of those coming in the Premier League.

That hasn’t stopped the Netherlands from calling up the now 22-year-old, and Memphis says just because he loves United doesn’t mean he’s content to play a periphery role.

From The Sun:

“I am the same person and I know what I want. A supporting role is not for me.

“I’m not a player who is happy with the fact that he is [just] under contract with Manchester United. This is my dream club, but I want to play.

“I feel like a loaded gun, I am ready to play, but wait for my chance. That’s why I’m so happy that I’m at Orange. This is a new opportunity to show myself.”

Memphis has just 94 minutes spread across five appearances for United under Jose Mourinho, but his value would still be strong in the transfer market.

With Henrikh Mkhitaryan, Anthony Martial, Marcus Rashford all ahead of him in the pecking order, how long do you give Memphis before he’s awakened from life at his dream club?
