On Thursday the Everton striker (on loan from West Ham) was playing for Ecuador against Chile in a CONMEBOL 2018 World Cup qualifier.
In the 82nd minute of Ecuador’s 3-0 home win over the reigning South American champions in Quito, Valencia went down injured and was carried off the pitch and towards an ambulance with a very serious looking hamstring injury.
This is where things get strange.
Reports had circled earlier on Thursday suggesting an arrest warrant was out for Valencia, 26, in Ecuador before the game in his homeland. It relates to him allegedly failing to pay child maintenance payments and Ecuadorian police reportedly turned up at training on Wednesday to try and retain him with the mother of his five-year-old daughter claiming Valencia owes her $17,000. The police were then at the Atahualpa Stadium in Quito to try and arrest him after the game.
His agent Gonzalo Vargas has since Tweeted about the incident and it appears the arrest warrant has now been revoked and Valencia will be able to play for Ecuador in Bolivia next Tuesday.
