Stoke City 2-0 Sunderland: Red-hot Allen hands Potters first win

Stoke City beat Sunderland 2-0 on Saturday at the bet365 Stadium as Joe Allen struck twice in the first half.

Allen has now scored in each of his last three Premier League games as the Welshman headed home early and slotted in another right on half time. Sunderland tried their best to get back in the game with Jermain Defore looking lively at times, but Stoke eased to victory in the end.

With the win Stoke move on to six points for the season. Sunderland remain on two points and without a win.

Allen continued his rich vein of form as he headed in early on. Xherdan Shaqiri set free Marko Arnautovic and he crossed from the left to Allen who nodded home. 1-0.

Stoke continued to do all the pressing but Sunderland had a brief chance with Defoe rifling an effort just over.

Geoff Cameron then sprayed the ball into Wilfried Bony‘s feet and he turned sharply but sent his shot into the side-netting. Stoke continued to push with Arnautovic going close, Cameron denied by a great save and Ryan Shawcross heading onto the roof of the net and then Allen grabbed his and Stoke’s second.

A corner was cleared to the edge of the box and Allen swung a left foot at it and it beat everyone and went in. 2-0.

Stoke continued to pour forward in the second half as Jordan Pickford made a superb stop down low to deny Bony and then Allen’s follow up was heroically blocked.

Sunderland tried to get going in attack but rarely threatened Stoke’s goal as Mark Hughes‘ men finally got their opening win of the season.
