Liverpool vs. Manchester United has been dubbed as “Red Monday” in the UK as the two bitter rivals clash at Anfield (Watch live, 3 p.m. ET on NBCSN and online via NBC Sports) in what will be a cauldron of noise.
Jurgen Klopp vs. Jose Mourinho has also arrived in the north west derby as a whole new dimension is added to one of the biggest rivalries in world soccer, plus both teams will be battling for at least the top four this season.
Heading into this game it is Liverpool who sit three points ahead of Manchester United as Klopp’s boys are the highest scorers in the Premier League this season with four wins on the spin. Their high-energy attack is a fluid machine and the likes of Divock Origi, Daniel Sturridge and Danny Ings are struggling to get a starting spot.
As for Mourinho and United they’ve been progressing in recent weeks, especially with a new combination in central midfield, but you get the sense that the Portuguese manager still doesn’t know his best starting lineup after a few months in charge at Old Trafford. United have lost against Manchester City at home and Watford away in their opening seven games of the season and Wayne Rooney‘s situation continues to hang over the team with the captain benched for the past three games.
In team news Liverpool could be without both Adam Lallana and Georginio Wijnaldum in midfield, while United’s only player missing through injury is Phil Jones.
What they’re saying
Klopp on the Anfield atmosphere: “I am quite optimistic because we have a wonderful opportunity to play a home game under the floodlights. It will be a fantastic atmosphere and trying your best in a situation like this is the best thing I can imagine when I think of football.”
Mourinho on Klopp’s wild touchline antics: “I’m on the touchline to try to coach. I’m not on the touchline . . . [doing this].”
Prediction
Mourinho is the master of the big games and often gets his tactics spot on. I’d expect United to be the better team defensively and I think this is the kind of game where Paul Pogba will step up. United to end Liverpool’s hot streak. 2-1 to the Red Devils.
