Controversy struck just three minutes into the second half, when Javier “Chicharito” Hernandez appeared to roll the ball just barely over the line, but the referee opted to continue play despite protests from the hosts.

Tottenham keeper Hugo Lloris gathered possession of the ball and did his best to keep it out, and upon replay it looked as though the French shotstopper actually did prevent the ball from crossing the line and going into the Spurs net.

Dele Alli nearly gave Spurs the lead before the half hour mark when the midfielder’s header flashed just wide of the post.

The English side kept the pressure up in the 40th minute, when Vincent Janssen‘s header struck the crossbar and stayed out before Erik Lamela‘s follow-up attempt also caught the woodwork.

Despite being stifled for much of the first half, Javier Hernandez nearly pulled one out for Leverkusen before halftime when the Mexican international struck a left-footed effort that just missed the near post.
