Manchester United 0-0 Burnley: Super Tom Heaton stifles 10-man Utd

  • United dominates through 68
  • Herrera sent off
  • Heaton makes 11 saves

It wasn’t Manchester United’s day, even if it was their 90 minutes.

Burnley goalkeeper Tom Heaton made any number of super saves on 36 Red Devils’ attempts, and several United finishes were left wanting in a scoreless draw at Old Trafford on Saturday.

United is in 8th, behind Watford on goal differential. Burnley moves into 13th, four points clear of the drop.

Jose Mourinho was sent to the stands for the second half. He was irate with referee Mark Clattenberg for not awarding a penalty to Matteo Darmian, who replays showed simulated contact.

Ander Herrera also left the game. While on yellow, he slipped on the turf and took out a Burnley player. Clattenberg showed the second yellow in the 69th minute.

Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Juan Mata worked opportunities in the first six minutes, but both shots went directly to readied Burnley keeper Tom Heaton.

Ibrahimovic was a terror, albeit lacking his usual clinical finishing. His work with Mata was magnetic, but Heaton and form conspired to keep the sheet clean through 30 minutes.

Oh, and Ibrahimovic had it at 1-0 off a Paul Pogba backheel, but Ben Mee made a terrific partial block to hold United to a corner. Then Jesse Lingard‘s header was saved brilliantly by Heaton.

It’s almost impossible to state how well Heaton played, at one point stopping an Ibrahimovic scissor kick with his arm and needing medical attention.

A second yellow to Herrera barely lifted Burnley’s odds, but the ascendant United just couldn’t score. There was another Darmian penalty appeal waved off in the 71st minute. Luke Shaw had a strong chance to score, Daley Blind, too. Nothing.

Ibrahimovic missed a massive doorstep chance in the 90th minute after Pogba sent a picture-perfect diagonal cross to the edge of the six. Substitute Wayne Rooney fired a late chance over the bar from 16 yards, point blank.
