Dortmund striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang was left out of the squad for Wednesday’s Champions League matchup with Sporting CP, an uninspiring game that finished 1-0 in favor of the Bundesliga squad.
The club was unwilling to release the reason for Aubameyang’s absence, simply disclosing that the miss was due to “internal reasons” with head coach Thomas Tuchel adamant after the game that the cause would remain a mystery.
Now, reports in Germany suggest that the 27-year-old striker was suspended for a match due to his late return from a party in Milan. With the team given an off day on Monday, Aubameyang apparently took a trip to Milan on a private jet for a party that night, and returned late Tuesday morning, causing him to show up in the middle of a team meeting.
Instagram posts tagged with the location of the Hotel Villa Borghi in Milan show pictures of Aubameyang attending an event. The striker eventually watched the win over Sporting on Wednesday from the stands, and Tuchel confirmed he would return for this weekend’s Bundesliga matchup with Hamburg.
The Gabon international has 10 goals in 13 games across all competitions this season for Dortmund, but the club has gone four matches winless in Bundesliga play, leaving them in sixth, eight points adrift of Bayern Munich at the top. They do, however, sit atop their Champions League group with 10 points, unbeaten in the four matches so far, with Real Madrid two behind them with two to play.
