  • De Roon equalizes in stoppage
  • City leads table by single point

Marten De Roon‘s shocking stoppage time header lifted Middlesbrough to a 1-1 draw at table-leading Manchester City on Saturday.

Sergio Aguero’s 150th Manchester City goal looked set to be the lone finish of a comfortable if unspectacular win, but George Friend‘s cross found de Roon for the equalizer.

The draw boosts City ahead of Arsenal and Liverpool by a single point before Sunday’s action. Boro moves four points clear of the drop with its point.

City was in control from the jump, and lorded over a Fernandinho-won free kick in the 12th minute. The wall blocked Kevin De Bruyne‘s effort out for a corner, which came to nothing.

De Bruyne had another chance a little more than 10 minutes later, but he dragged his shot across goal and wide of the far post from a tough angle.

David Silva and Sergio Aguero had several chances as the half wore on, but Boro keeper Victor Valdes proved up to the challenge in a starring role.

After a Jesus Navas cleat left a gaping wound on Valdes leg, Man City found its opener. De Bruyne swept a beautiful ball into the path of Aguero’s well-timed run, and it was 1-0 heading into half.

It looked like it would end that way, aside from a chance or two including Alvaro Negredo’s speculative rip from distance, until Friend’s cross found De Roon for the tying goal.
