Following their 2-0 win against Sunderland on Saturday, Klopp had several injury issues to address in his press conference on Monday as he looked ahead to the Leeds match.
Brazilian playmaker Philippe Coutinho seems likely to be a long-term absentee with the 24-year-old stretchered off in the first half of Saturday’s win after injuring his right ankle in a tackle.
Klopp confirmed that Coutinho will have a scan later on Monday to assess the severity of the damage. It doesn’t look too good for Coutinho as things stand.
As for the other injury worries, here’s what Klopp had to say.
“Adam (Lallana) is in a very good way, close to team training, but not ready for the game,” Klopp said. “Daniel (Sturridge) is not in team training, Roberto (Firmino) we have to wait. Yesterday he was still painful, so we have to wait. I think it will be OK, but I’m not sure.”
So, out of Liverpool’s top four forward players, only Sadio Mane remains injury free.
Its unlikely Lallana, Firmino or Coutinho would’ve played against Leeds anyway but for Daniel Sturridge it would’ve been a great chance to get some valuable minutes under his belt after losing his spot as a regular starter in recent months.
The most concerning injury worry for Klopp is Coutinho. He has been on top form this season, scoring five goals and adding five assists in 12 Premier League games. Without his creative flair in the team, the Reds will be hit.
Considering all of these injuries to attacking players, it’s unlikely Klopp will take many risks against Leeds on Tuesday. And although it would be nice for Liverpool to win their first piece of silverware under Klopp after he guided them to the League Cup and UEFA Europa League finals last season but lost out on both occasion, every realizes finishing at least in the top four of the Premier League and potentially challenging for the title is the main aim.
To do that, Klopp needs his fluid to four fit and healthy.
