“Goals plus performance means the real happiness.”

Jose Mourinho was impressed by his charges as Manchester United buried West Ham in the EFL Cup quarterfinals on Wednesday, a 4-1 win setting up a semifinal against Hull City in January.

Zlatan Ibrahimovic scored his 10th and 11th goals for United, while Anthony Martial also nabbed a brace against the Irons. Henrikh Mkhitaryan was pulling all the strings with a pair of assists, and the Red Devils were flying for most of the evening.

Here’s Mou:

“After the West Ham goal we had 10 minutes where we felt it deeply. West Ham’s first shot, they equalise. But in the second half we got the confidence to play and play beautiful, attacking football.

“I told them at half-time it is not possible to play so well and because of a goal stop to play so well. I told them to forget about the undeserved goal, we are playing so well, we have to keep the confidence and lets go on with it.

“Goals plus performance means the real happiness.”

Who wants fake happiness anyway?

United looked very good, something they’ve shown on occasion this year though not with the consistency expected under a boss like Mourinho (whose first years in town have generally been excellent).

Let’s see if the Red Devils keep bringing the real happiness come Sunday at Everton.
