Reports claimed that Manchester United had already written off Bastian Schweinsteiger, but that doesn’t mean Jose Mourinho is done with the German midfielder.
Schweinsteiger, 32, had reportedly been exploring a move to MLS — Chicago mentioned most often — but made a surprise appearance for United in this week’s EFL Cup quarterfinal loss to West Ham United.

The manager had said that Schweinsteiger’s return to the team had to do with getting him fit for his next stop, but now claims he doesn’t think Schweinsteiger’s departure is a certainty.
So can he stay? From the BBC:
“Of course he can,” said Mourinho. “If you have a contract you are the powerful one that can decide your future. In the summer we try to make something happen for Bastian to get a different future. He decided to stay in difficult circumstances.
“In January he is the powerful one – and with better feelings than before.”
An MLS move still seems on the cards, as the “powerful” comments make clear.
