This may add some extra spice to Arsenal’s trip to West Ham United on Saturday (Watch live, 12:30 p.m. ET on NBC and online via NBCSports.com).

Reports from the Sun newspaper claim than Arsene Wenger is lining up a January move for Dimitri Payet as West Ham’s playmaker is said to be mulling over his future options.

At the age of 29, Payet is at or near the peak of his powers.

He excelled in his first season in the Premier League last season, scoring nine goals and adding 12 assists in 30 appearances as West Ham finished in seventh lace and he then shone for France at EURO 2016, becoming a regular as the hosts were runners up.

However, this season West Ham have struggled to get going and look likely to be embroiled in a relegation battle under Slaven Bilic.

Despite that fact, Payet has still created the most goalscoring chances in any of Europe’s top five leagues (plus scored once and added five assists) and it is believed the Frenchman is thinking about making a move in January, despite only signing a new contract extension with the Hammers in the summer.

There’s no doubting Payet’s quality but some may question his aptitude for rolling up his sleeves in what is an increasingly likely¬†relegation battle at West Ham.

At Arsenal, he may not play regularly with Mesut Ozil, Alexis Sanchez and others around, but Wenger has been a huge admirer of Payet for many years, talking him up this summer, at the end of last season and recently.

If Payet were to demand a move from West Ham, it wouldn’t come cheaply and it’s unlikely the already under-fire owners of the Hammers would want to sell their star player to London rivals Arsenal and further risk upsetting their currently disgruntled fans following the tumultuous move to the London Stadium.

Stranger things have happened, especially if Arsenal make the Hammers an offer they can’t refuse with Payet edging towards 30 and clearly not too interested in a relegation battle…
