Stoke City 0-0 Southampton: 10-man Potters hold Saints

Southampton drew 0-0 at Stoke City on Wednesday despite the Potters being down to 10-men at the Bet365 Stadium after just 23 minutes.

Marko Arnautovic was sent off for a lunging tackle on Sofiane Boufal and despite heavy pressure Saints couldn’t make the most of their one-man advantage with Shane Long and Jay Rodriguez going close.

With the point Saints move on to 21 points, Stoke move on to 20 points.

Early on Stoke looked lively and Joe Allen burst into the box but his low effort was saved down low by Fraser Forster, while at the other end Saints had a half chance after good work from Boufal set up Shane Long but his shot hit the side-netting.

Saints went close again soon after with Ryan Bertrand playing in some dangerous crosses from the left but he couldn’t quite find his teammates.

Soon after Saints had a one-man advantage as Arnautovic caught Boufal with a late tackle and Stoke were down to 10-men midway through the first half. Nightmare for Mark Hughes‘ side.

In the second half Saints pushed hard for the opening goal as first Virgil Van Dijk saw his free kick hit Charlie Adam‘s arm in the wall but no penalty kick was given and then a corner was flicked on and cleared on the line by Erik Pieters.

Saints continued to knock at the door with Bertrand forcing a save and then Bruno Martins Indi cleared another effort off the line as the Potters battened down the hatches.

Boufal then teed up substitute Jay Rodriguez but he couldn’t sort out his feet and missed a glorious chance from close range and that was as good as it got.

Saints were held by a valiant defensive effort from Stoke.
