Memphis Depay could indeed have a way out of Manchester United.
Frozen out by Jose Mourinho amid the club’s slight uptick in form, Memphis Depay could be on his way to Everton, where manager Ronald Koeman has previously expressed interest in the Dutch winger.
According to the Manchester Evening News, Depay is close to finalizing a January move to Everton that would be a permanent transfer, not a loan as has been rumored for the past few weeks. About a month ago, Koeman confirmed his interest in Depay, saying, “I would like to have him.”
The biggest hint towards a move away from Old Trafford for Memphis was the comment made by Mourinho ahead of the Europa League trip to Zorya last week. The manager revealed Memphis was one of five healthy scratches who did not make the trip in order to “protect them.” There are few things one could conclude from those comments, with the most logical being Mourinho wants to keep them fit to maximize the likelihood of a successful transfer.
Memphis has barely played this season, with a measly 20 total minutes in Premier League play across four bench appearances. At 22 years old, the Dutchman will want as much top flight playing time as possible to continue his development. Mourinho has made it clear that won’t be at Manchester United.
Adding fuel to the fire, Memphis posted a Snapchat image a few nights ago showing himself with Everton attacker Romelu Lukaku. He has also been doing separate training apart from the United grounds.
