  • Gray scores late winner
  • Burnley passes Boro
  • Clarets six clear of drop

Andre Gray‘s fantastic finish lifted Burnley into 14th after a 1-0 win over visiting Middlesbrough at Turf Moor on Boxing Day.

Tom Heaton‘s long ball was flicked into the path of Gray, who hammered a shot off Victor Valdes and into the goal.

Boro is four points clear of the drop, but falls behind Burnley in the loss.

In a game more notable for its cautions than offense, the Clarets and Boro traded six yellow cards in the first hour alone.

It would be polite to even call the first half scrappy, as the sides struggled to produce chances. Cristhian Stuani had a decent effort for Boro, and visiting keeper Victor Valdes made a couple of manageable saves in the frame.

Out of almost nothing came Gray. Moments after a Fabio yellow card, goalkeeper Tom Heaton sent a long ball that Sam Vokes flicked to Gray for a terrific first touch finish.
