Rooney, 31, had equaled Sir Bobby Charlton’s record of 249 goals two weeks ago and his stunning free kick in stoppage time at Stoke City — the record-breaking goal sealed a 1-1 draw — means he is now out on his own as the leading all-time scorer for United.

Reacting to the record, this is what Rooney had to say.

“Yeah a hell of a lot. A great honor. I’m very proud,” Rooney said. “It is difficult at the minute to be over pleased because of the result, two points dropped. But in the grand scheme of things it is a huge honor for me and something I never expected when I joined the club. But I am delighted and really proud.”
